Mesopotamian Homesick Blues
Here's a new Secret Archives of the Vatican tune. We were holding this for the next release but we've had a harddrive failure in the studio so we're not sure if we still have the master WAV file. We've still got the multitrack recording so we can always do it again - but here's an mp3 of the original mix.

Transnational Trackfest
Highly influential music blog Generation Bass has featured a Secret Archives of the Vatican tune and two unauthorised remixes/mashups that we put together for a DJ set by the Secret Archives of the Vatican Soundsystem a few weeks back. One of the remixes is listed as being by Yohei but that's because SoundCloud presents tunes as being by the uploader rather than the artist.
Check it out here:

Cassettes
In these days when the traditional mainstream music industry is in freefall and anyone can make and release tunes very easily, some people are messing about with older physical formats - I guess there's a certain perception of 'coolness' about releasing your music on 7 inch vinyl for example. I've been aware that a few people have been releasing on the crappiest old format of all, the cassette. Here's a picture of some I saw today. I have no particular ideological objection to cassettes (apart from thinking they're shit) but to charge £12.99 for a cassette is nothing less than blatant thievery. Rough Trade should be ashamed of themselves.

A Jamaican in Cairo EP
There's two things that we like here in the Secret Archives - Arabic music and Jamaican music. Oh, yeah, bigtime on both counts. So, when we hear about a release called A Jamaican in Cairo our reaction is like Pavlov's legendary hound at the sniff of some Pedigree Chum. Gotta check this out!
The band, Diaspora, has four members, Luca Gatti, Stephane René, Baheeg Ramzy Mikhail and Amina Annabi, all well respected musicians in their own fields.
Italian born Luca Gatti is the founding member of Diaspora. Over the years he has worked with such artists as General Levy, Gaudi and Asian Dub Foundation. French composer/musician Stephane René specialises in traditional stringed instruments and his performances on oud, saz, guitar and percussion are a major contribution to this project. Baheeg Ramzy Mikhail contributes vocals and violin as well as a wealth of knowledge and expertise gained through a long and prolific career. Known as ‘the master of the Maqam’ (the Arabic scale system) he has worked with many of the great figures in Arabic music, including the much celebrated singer and composer the late Mohammed Abdel Wahab and the legendary Om Kalthoum. Amina Annabi is a well known French Tunisian singer who fuses her traditional Arab roots with modern Western styles.
In 2006 Diaspora was commissioned by the English National Opera to co-compose and arrange the score for the opera Gaddafi: A living myth in collaboration with Asian Dub Foundation. It was during this time that the beginnings of A Jamaican in Cairo took shape.
Well, a four track EP is here! A Jamaican in Cairo EP features four tracks from the forthcoming album, which I believe will be available in October:
Running for Cover features veteran of the Jamaican reggae scene Bob Andy. As one of Studio One's leading lights, he worked closely with Jackie Mittoo on many of the label's seminal sounds. Since then he has been ceaselessly composing, recording and performing and remains a household name who has truly earned his place in the firmament of reggae stars. Talented vocalist Raiz adds his instantly recognisable voice to the title track Diaspora. As the ex front-man of Italian cult band Almamegretta he is a well established artist who has also featured in the work of many other high profile artists, including recordings with our dub hero Bill Laswell, Leftfield (Rhythm and Stealth) and Massive Attack (Karmacoma).
So - what does it sound like? Rootsical rather than dubwise but tastefully played, with great vocals and a nice clean production. It grooves along sweetly with a delicious Eastern feel permeating the riddims. Here's a little taster on the SoundCloud website:

Gajoob
Back in 1990, I spotted an intriguing looking magazine on the racks at Tower records (I think...) in London. It was called Gajoob and it came from the US. It dealt with a pre-internet world that is now long gone but which was amazing and creative - the world of homemade music, sold and distributed by mail when the world's postal services were still quite good. Most items were on cassette and the scene had absolutely nothing to do with the mainstream music industry. I loved it! Gajoob reviewed thousands of cassettes and other homemade art.
Gajoob was a huge inspiration to me as I was starting Secret Archives of the Vatican. I had a Fostex four-track cassette-based home studio and was starting to release cassettes. Gajoob opened up a whole world of possibility and pointed me towards contacts, collaborators and other 'zines. At some point I made contact with the main man, Bryan Baker.
Well, here we are, two decades later and by the mighty power of Facebook, I've made contact again. Gajoob is still alive, albeit in web form and its offshoot/alter-ego, Homemade Music, is also thriving.
They say:
GAJOOB has been reviewing independent music since 1987. We review all styles of independently released CDs, cassettes, net albums and vinyl. We are returning to print late fall 2010.
Gajoob began in 1987 as a print 'zine by Bryan Baker focused on home recording artists and independent music activities. The final print issue was in 1994. Bryan produced a weekly 3-hour radio show from 1991-1994 on Salt Lake City's KRCL called Cassette Culture Shock which featured the artists sending tape albums to Gajoob. Bryan Baker began publishing The DiY Report in 1994, an email subscription newsletter which gathered news of independent music activities and featured articles and interviews with indie artists. 124 issues were published until 2001 and the content was archived via the web. The Gajoob website was also home to Gajoob Radio, a streaming RealAudio radio show of music and artist interviews.
From 2000-2010, Gajoob evolved into various interrelated activities and websites, including homemademusic.com, tapegerm.com, discoversounds.com, along with on-demand CD manufacturing and online sales.
2010 sees the return of GAJOOB Magazine , sometime this autumn. Bryan says that coverage will be much the same as before. They will strive to give voice to the creative impulse and hear what artists have to say about that. If you like discovering new music or want to keep up with creative music activities then GAJOOB Magazine is something you'll want to read.
GAJOOB Magazine will be published with a CD of 100+ tracks direct from recording studios around the world. Each track will carry detailed notes from artists about the making of it. To be included on the mp3 CD simply submit a track to homemademusic.com. Include details about making your music: what inspired you, what was the process, related anecdotes, etc.
Reviews
GAJOOB's album listings can contain much more than a review of your album. Artist commentary, interviews, streaming audio are included as well. They will review CDs, cassette, vinyl, DVD, and online album releases (also called netlabel and free music culture). Mailyour release to them or let them know where to find it via their contact page. See their submission guide for details.

Free music from Secret Archives of the Vatican on Bandcamp
We have been adding Secret Archives of the Vatican releases to the Bandcamp website and you can see our page HERE.
Bandcamp is great because you have a wide choice of download formats available - you're not stuck with crappy mp3s - in fact, the lowest quality mp3 available is the highest quality mp3, a 320kbps.
We've added our two most recent EP releases, The Glidepath EP and Wisdom Truth. Both are free.
We've also added our 2009 album release, Remembering Machine, and it is now free also!
We'll be adding more tunes soon!

LMNZ - Worldwide Rap
LMNZ - Worldwide Rap is a new album release that features one of our favourite MCs, The Narcycist, as well as an amazing collection or MCs from around this planet.
The album features too many vocalists, instrumentalists and DJs to list here but you can read all the details and acquire the album from HERE.
They say: LMNZ had the vision to produce a Hip-Hop album that brings the world closer, a multilingual Hip-Hop album without a limit to musical influence. Musicians with different styles from diverse backgrounds fused together.

COREnered: Q&A with Secret Archives of the Vatican
There's a Q&A with Secret Archives of the Vatican here on the TuneCore blog: COREnered: Q&A with Secret Archives of the Vatican
Producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist, Dub Gabriel has been pushing the limits of subwoofers worldwide for over a decade. His musical explorations in Brooklyn in the mid 90s drew him to the outer limits of the New York scene where he got his start as a DJ at the legendary Limelight Club. With his early sound being a portent of today’s burgeoning dubstep scene, his bass-bending style and hard-hitting sets launched him as a trailblazing figure in the New York underground club scene and gained him the attention of leading publications that include XLR8R, Interview, Billboard, Pitchfork, Time Out New York, The Wire, International DJ and countless others.
Restless Youth is the follow up to Dub Gabriel's single, Luv n’ Liv which featured the legendary U-Roy on the mic. With Restless Youth, Dub Gabriel continues to push the musical envelope even further, delivering a deep and heavy dancehall-meets-dubstep scorcher.
Buy it HERE.
For the lead track, No Lies, Dub Gabriel has paired up with none other than MC Zulu, one of the most sought-after ragga vocalists in electronic music today. Zulu has been killing dance floors worldwide over the past few years, having collaborated with Ghislain Poirier (Ninja Tune), Soulico (J-Dub) and a host of other top producers – his newest track with Dub Gabriel is set to be one of this year’s hottest dance-floor bangers! On the studio front, Dub Gabriel once again enlisted the services of electronic music icon, Mark Pistel (Meat Beat Manifesto, Hercules & The Love Affair, Grace Jones) – the two of them pushing an arsenal of analogue synths, drum machines, vintage tape echoes and outboard studio gear to the max.
Restless Youth features four tracks which, on top of the incendiary No Lies, includes the post-apocalyptic sounds of Babylon Shall Fall, the riddim treatment of Set the Lazers to Destroy the Sun and, the dance floor crushing frequencies of Tactile Evasion, a remix of No Lies from the mighty Liquid Stranger.

Psilicon Dreams 9
Splendid Beats - Psilicon Dreams 9 podcast opens with one of our tunes, Gold and Slaves - download or listen to it HERE.

They appear to have run the entire track through a reverb unit to dub it up a little....
The main man, Crispy, says this:
Heavily inspired by a fantastic few days at the mighty Shambhala Music Festival, I assembled a groovy mix of the many shades of dub. From straight-up, to world beats, to techy, to a dash of dubstep… it’s all there. I even dubbed-up the artwork to complete the package. Highlights include a classic slice of The Orb, new tracks from Adham Shaikh and Kalpataru Tree, some serious deepness from KiloWatts and Evan Marc & Steve Hillage, an absolute ripper from Nagual Sound Experiment vs. Ital Roots Player, and the dubtronic masters, Pitch Black, bringing us safely back to earth at the end.

Flying Lotus - Inside the Codex: the Art of Cosmogramma
Flying Lotus makes some intriguing electronic music that is (strangely, to my mind) often marketed as dubstep, which is clearly isn't. Here's a video, Flying Lotus - Inside the Codex: the Art of Cosmogramma, which is a short feature on the concepts behind his latest album Cosmogramma , released in May 2010, and its artwork.

Born Free
This is an amazing and slightly disturbing video. There’s so little music out there that says anything at all these days that it’s good to see this.

Arabian House Mix
Here's a cheesy Arabian House Mix we did a short while back.
This was a mix we took to Morocco in June 2010 with the idea that we might spin a set at the Jambash, a series of small scale events happening at the same time as the annual Gnawa Festival in Essaouira. For various reasons, we didn't get to spin, so here's the mix, just for you! It's a bit cheesy but we like it!!
